2025 SSEP Participants

2025 SSEP Sponsors

The Student Summer Employment Program (SSEP) offers young women employment opportunities in STEM to gain insight into the rewarding range of careers available to them. This summer there were 24 High School students in positions of chemistry, psychology, biochemistry, medicine, engineering, HKR, & earth sciences. We had an increase by 140% in student positions offered in 2025 compared to 2024, increasing the number of young women gaining hands-on experience.

Students visited a wide variety of places to learn about opportunities in STEM. Tours included the Marine Institute, MUN Faculty of Medicine, Engineering & Applied Sciences, Trinity Minerals Pyrophyllite Mine, as well as the National Research Council, The Launch and Port of Argentia and Vale. In addition to these educational outings, the group also had social events to network and build meaningful relationships. The program wrapped up with Final Presentation Day. All students presented their summer experience to supervisors, coworkers, sponsors, board members, family, and friends. The presentations were phenomenal and were followed by a reception to celebrate the accomplishments of all the students! We look forward to SSEP 2026 and another successful summer of inspiring young women to pursue STEM!

The MUN Women in Engineering Memorial (WEM) Scholarship was established to honour the memory of fourteen women who were violently murdered on December 6, 1989 because they were women. The scholarship seeks to encourage more women to study engineering, thereby increasing the contribution of women in engineering and scientific endeavours and challenging bias against women’s full participation.

Since its creation, WISE NL has participated on the Selection Committee along with representative from C-CORE and the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science, Alumni Association, and Gender Studies at MUN. At least one $2500 scholarship is awarded each year. As of 2025, over $113,000 has been awarded to 58 women.

Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program ran from January to September with 44 participants, an increase of 144% since 2024. We grew our LinkedIn mentorship group creating a community where women can share relevant information to expand its reach. We also opened participation to all women and marginalized genders creating meaningful connections with professionals to provide support and advice to guide their educations and careers. In 2026 we hope to welcome even more people into our mentorship program.
Over 2025 we’ve had 5 successful Speaker Series Events. We began the year with a Mentorship focused event. Discussing the benefits of building professional connections and recounting personal successes with mentorship.

In March, we had an inspiring evening with Dr. Paula Mendonça, the Executive Director of the Ocean Startup Project. Then in October, we had an engaging event with Dr. Lindsay Cahill, where we explored the impact of environmental exposures on pregnancy and early life. In November, we heard from Dr. Svetlana Barkanova, an internationally acclaimed physicist, on the quantum discovery and innovation. We concluded the year with a Memorial documentary screening and panel discussion in honour of the 36th anniversary since the École Polytechnique massacre. In 2026, we look forward to holding even more Speaker Series Events to engage with inspiring women and highlighting the women’s contributions to science and engineering.
