WISE NL Speaker Series is pleased to present a panel featuring two women from the oil and gas industry whose work includes integration of issues such as environmental stewardship, biodiversity and ecosystem services into company-wide operations. The panel will discuss approaches in communicating applied ecology to internal and external stakeholders in the engineering-driven oil and gas industry. The audience will also have a chance to learn about the panelists’ personal experiences in translating applied research into real world successes within the oil and gas field and to discuss challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

About panelists

Lucie N’Guessan, Engineering Associate, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company, Houston, Texas, USA 

Lucie currently leads research projects for the application of environmental genomics in environmental characterization and monitoring. She holds expertise in environmental management and regulatory compliance.

Lucie’s responsibilities include developing tools and strategies for improved environmental stewardship in oil and gas activities. She has worked on oil spill response technologies, remote sensing as a tool for environmental characterization and monitoring, as well as remediation technologies.

Lucie is originally from Cote D’Ivoire. She received a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science and Biochemistry from Minnesota State University, Mankato and a Doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.



Paola Maria Pedroni, Senior Environmental Advisor with the Safety, Environment and Quality Department of Eni Upstream, Milan, Italy

Paola’s responsibilities include integration of environmental sustainability and management of biodiversity and ecosystem service issues into company-wide best practices and global operations.

As part of her work in Oil & Gas trade associations, she is Eni’s member representative to the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP), co-chair of the IOGP Environment Committee and Eni representative on the Executive Committee of the IOGP Joint Industry Programme “E&P Sound and Marine Life”. Paola also represents Eni on the IOGP/IPIECA Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services Working Group, which she served as chair from 2010 to 2015. She is also part of the Environment Committee of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

Paola is a molecular biologist by education and a certified freelance journalist. She has a broad range of R&D experience having worked for over 20 years in the biotechnology and environmental sectors both as a Principal Investigator and Project Manager.
