Panel 2: Getting Established

The first five to ten years of a career are a critical time for technical women. Statistics show that is the period when many women transition out of the technical workforce, especially in engineering. The panelists will share personal experiences, discuss what employers are doing for those early in their careers and provide advice on the type of support that young professionals should be requesting.

Kim Keating - Director of Projects. GJ Cahill & Company Limited

Kim KeatingKim Keating is the Director of Projects with GJ Cahill & Co. Ltd. Kim has over 16 years experience in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil and gas industry. She started work on the Hibernia project and, in 1997, joined the Terra Nova project design team, located in the United Kingdom, with Petro-Canada (now Suncor Energy Inc.). Kim has held a variety of positions throughout the Terra Nova Development from engineering design through to construction, commissioning and finally production operations. Kim has also supported field development activities for other East Coast developments including White Rose, Hibernia and Hebron as well as Beta Brent in Norway, and Buzzard and Golden Eagle Area Development in the UK.

Kim holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Memorial University and is a registered member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). She also holds her Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation and has completed her Masters in Business Administration.

Kim is an elected member of the Memorial University Board of Regents, Executive 1st Vice Chair with the St. John’s Board of Trade, founding member of the International Women’s Forum NL Chapter, Chair of the Rhodes Scholarship in Canada regional selection committee and a past president of WISE NL (Women in Science & Engineering). Kim also participates on several advisory committees to both PEGNL and Memorial University.

Stacey Earle-Baggs - Project Manager, Iron Ore Company of Canada

Stacey Earle-Baggs Stacey Earle-Baggs, Sustaining Engineering Processing Operations - Project Manager, Iron Ore Company of Canada, began her career with the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) as a co-op student and joined IOC full-time in 2008 upon graduating from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.

Through IOC's Graduate Development Program, Stacey has held a variety of challenging and diverse roles as a technical advisor, project manager, and team leader in departments across the IOC project.

Stacey brings valuable professional skills, effective interpersonal skills, and a positive attitude to her current role as Project Manager with IOC's Sustaining Engineering Department. As part of the Sustaining Engineering team, Stacey's leadership helped to successfully deliver the Oshkosh Striker fire truck, a critical player in IOC's emergency response capability, as well as implement software to manage capital expenditures that ensures capital projects are completed on time and on budget.

In addition to her main role as Project Manager, Stacey is also an active participant in IOC's B3 Ergonomics and Contractor Management teams helping to improve health and safety initiatives at IOC.

A native Newfoundlander, Stacey currently resides in Labrador West where she is an avid volunteer with Labrador West Girl Guides.

Michael Hanrahan - President and founder of petroforma inc.

Michael Hanrahan Michael Hanrahan is the President and founder of petroforma inc. in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Country Manager for Swire Pacific Offshore. petroforma is the only full service reservoir fluids laboratory east of Alberta and Swire Pacific Offshore is one of the world's largest provider of specialized vessels to support the offshore oil & gas industry.

Prior to his return to NL in 2004, Michael was with Irving Oil where he held senior positions. From 1997 to 2000, Michael was part of the management team for the $1billion Irving Oil Refinery expansion, the first major refinery expansion project in North America since 1980. Between 2001 and 2004, he led the Project Team for the first Liquefied Natural Gas receiving terminal in Canadian history.

Concurrent with these activities, while at Irving Oil, Michael had responsibility in Canada and the United States for Government Relations, Health, Environment, Safety and Loss Management. Michael has participated on Working Groups with the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy, Environment Canada, and was the proponent for the first substantive change to the Rules of Origin under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He has advised the Senate Committee on Energy, Bank of Canada, and the National Energy Board.

Michael's career philosophy is, "be first to do the right things and do the right things first." As a quiet champion of sustainability and diversity, Michael endeavors to ensure companies with which he is associated are committed to sustainable development and that their workforce mirrors the diversity of the industry it serves. petroforma drafted a commitment to have an ethnically diverse and gender balanced workforce before it had one customer. Swire Pacific Offshore has a stated commitment to be carbon neutral, publishes an annual sustainability report, and boasts a diverse, global workforce.

Michael has pursued studies and executive development courses at Memorial University of Newfoundland, McGill University, York University, Rutgers University and Babson College.

Janna Rosales - Assistant Professor, Memorial University

Janna Rosales Janna Rosales works at the intersection of the sciences and humanities. She is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science where she studies technology's social and ethical impacts, and teaches in the areas of ethics, communication, and professionalism. Her work also explores the role that universities can play in educating 21st Century global citizens, with a particular focus on creativity studies, leadership development, and dialogue education. Most recently she has contributed writing on student engagement to University Affairs magazine, been a member of the Expert Working Group for the Office of Public Engagement at Memorial University, and spoke on "Education the Ignites the Heart and Mind" at the province's first-ever TEDxFortTownshend event. In her spare time she has been known to teach chocolate-tasting workshops, sing in two local choirs, and hike the East Coast Trail.
